Medical Discoveries and Innovation in Miami

The Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is a hub for biomedical innovation and discovery. 

In 2018, Miami CTSI received a five-year $21.5 million grant to fund the discovery of new cures, medical treatments, and collaborative studies. This was the second cycle of funding after the institution proved detrimental in accelerating translational and clinical research. 

A group of scientists from the Otolaryngology Department, led by Suhrud M. Rajguru, Ph.D., created a new system for providing therapeutic hypothermia directly to the inner ear. This procedure can preserve any residual hearing after surgical trauma from cochlear implantation.

In 2023, Miami Clinical Research announced the launch of its 2022-23 Expansion Project. This initiative involves the addition of a comprehensive imaging and diagnostic center, alongside a PB&C lab to their current clinical trials and medical research facilities. The project allows Miami Clinical Research to provide support and a wide range of services to medical research partners.

Why Miami Is A Great Place For Clinical Research 

Miami has a great climate and accessibility, making it a prime location for year-round research. This ensures consistent data collection and minimizes potential seasonal variations. 

Miami is also in close proximity to the Caribbean and Latin America. This allows for cross-border collaborations, which expands the reach of clinical trials to international volunteers.

Many of Miami’s residents actively participate in clinical trials. And considering that the population here is relatively diverse, it makes for a great place for medical studies. Recent reports show that 28.04% of the population is White, 14.11% is Black, 0.34% is American Indian, 1.38% is Asian, 0.03% is Native Hawaiian, 43.81% is Multiracial, and 12.29% are other races.
