While South Dakota may not have an extensive history of medical innovations as some other states, ongoing research and collaborative efforts within the healthcare community have improved medicine and patient care. Here are some of these improvements: 

  • Brain research and innovation: The Center for Brain and Behavior Research (CBBRe) has had a significant impact on clinical research. Especially in the fields of neurology and neuroscience. Their studies helped improve early intervention, diagnosis, and treatment approaches. 
  • Infectious disease research: South Dakota research institutions actively collect, analyze, and interpret health data to monitor infectious diseases. Their data helps identify patterns, trends, and therapy impact. 
  • The 1815 Project: In 2018, the CDC released a call to address health issues among U.S. citizens with heart problems and diabetes through CDC-1815. Facilities in South Dakota worked together to create a 5-year plan to develop possible solutions and find different barriers to patient care.
