As of July 2026, 3,858 studies are actively recruiting volunteers in Florida, according to ClinicalTrials.gov — one of the largest totals in the country. Unlike most states, the activity is spread across four major hubs: Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University of Florida in Gainesville, and Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

Presently there are over 400 vendors offering CRO opportunities in the state. CRO stands for Clinical Research Organization. Essentially, these facilities conduct trials for a variety of medical needs, some of which involve cutting-edge research. It’s estimated that .005% of the total US population needs to be engaged in such research at all times for it to advance in a consistent and meaningful way.

That means, statistically speaking, you can expect 110,000 people from Miami to Pensacola, and everywhere in between, to be involved in some sort of paid clinical trial at any given time. With 400 vendors providing opportunities, that means each vendor handles about 275 research subjects. That could be 10 separate studies with 27 to 28 participants or just one big study. A good rule of thumb when identifying appropriate paid clinical trials nearby for healthy volunteers is to explore local demographics. Medical facilities have to work with what, and who is available. Census data is very illuminating here.

From the same link that gave us the population for Florida, we find that Caucasians are 71.64% of the population, Blacks occupy 15.94% of the population, individuals with two or more races in their ethnic background are 6.02% of the population, and all other ethnic groups represent 3.3% or less of the total state.

It’s important to keep in mind that Caucasian stats include Hispanic populations, as many Hispanic people are ethnically rooted in Europe owing to the Spanish conquest several hundred years ago.

The Generic Database (GDB) is a registry of very low birth weight infants born alive in NICHD Neonatal Research Network (NRN) centers.
