One of the most notable discoveries in IL are the organ transplant breakthroughs. In 1999, UChicago Medicine completed the world’s first successful heart-liver-kidney transplant. 

In 2018, experts performed the first ever back-to-back triple-organ transplants, replacing failing livers, hearts, and kidneys for two patients. In 2020, they made history again with one of the country’s earliest heart transplants for a patient whose heart was damaged by COVID-19.
